The Melbourne techno scene is built on the foundations laid by a handful of dedicated selectors who have remained committed to the craft for over three decades. Among these veterans, few names carry as much weight as Dave Pham. A master of the booth with an innate ability to read any dance floor, Pham’s journey is a testament to the enduring power of underground electronic music in Australia. From his early residencies in the 1990s to his upcoming headline set at Underground Session 5 in Adelaide, his career has been defined by a relentless pursuit of musical freedom.
The Early Years: 1990s
Dave Pham's obsession with techno began in the early 1990s, a period when the Melbourne underground was finding its voice through warehouse parties and emerging club culture. By the mid 90's Pham was helping to shape the sound of Melbourne's burgeoning techno scene alongside promoters like Hardware, War of the Worlds, Acid Reign and Agent Mad.
The New Millennium
At the turn of the millennium, Pham was a staple of the Wet Musick party scene. He later co-founded Stable Music alongside Kevin Karlberg, where the duo partnered to bring a series of ground-breaking artists to Australian shores such as Fumiya Tanaka, Inigo Kennedy, Vitalic, Square Pusher and Richard Devine. During this time Pham also supported luminaries such as Richie Hawtin, Jeff Mills Derrick May Robert Hood Kevin Saunderson Dave Clarke and Ben Simms.
During this era, Pham was also a rotating resident at the legendary Lounge, Deep 11 and Honkytonks. The club, which closed its doors on New Year’s Eve in 2006, is remembered as one of the most influential spaces in Australian clubbing history. Pham was part of the "Last Dance" lineup, playing alongside Boogs and Spacey Space to close out an era that many still regard as a golden age for Melbourne’s nightlife.
Evolution and the Current Day
As the 2010s progressed, Pham’s sound continued to evolve. While his roots remained firmly planted in techno, he became known for his ability to traverse genres, moving into deeper, house sounds and electro disco while maintaining a love for stripped-back, impactful music. His philosophy has always been centred on the idea that music should provide the freedom to explore different sounds and build a unique journey for the listener.
In recent years, Pham has remained a cornerstone of the techno community. Through projects like Rave Signal, he pays tribute to 1990s Melbourne rave culture, spotlighting the first-generation DJs who defined the city's underground sound.
His status as a veteran is undisputed, with over 30 years of experience informing every set he plays. Whether warming up for international icons like Jeff Mills or headlining local festivals, his commitment to the underground has never wavered.
